My Son Wore Jeans Today

One of the privileges of having a kid with special needs is you never take the little things for granted--like wearing jeans. My son does not like jeans. But, today, my son wore jeans. He came home last night and informed me he had to wear jeans the next day in order to be able to ride a horse on his field trip. Fortunately, I keep a pair of jeans around in his size. They are usually from a garage sale. I keep them for the remote possibility he might actually want to wear them. I never imagined it would ever happen! So, when he announced this, I headed up to the attic and retrieved the jeans.
We put them on this morning and off to school he went looking very handsome and "normal". I laughed with delight when the aide got him out of the Jeep. "Don't laugh at me", my son said. I told him I was laughing because I was very happy. I actually cried a bit on the way home.
So, while others are celebrating the graduation of their children or receiving a Nobel Peace Prize, I am celebrating jeans. And I must confess that I'd be no less proud if he won the Peace Prize. For in wearing jeans today, my son showed he cares about what others think...even if it is just a little. To me that is nothing less than a miracle.
By the way, he LOVED riding the horse.
